Katy roofs take a beating from June through September. Weeks of triple-digit heat index days bake the shingles, afternoon thunderstorms push water into every weak spot, and hurricane season brings the risk of high winds and sideways rain. By October, it makes sense to take stock. This fall roof maintenance checklist Katy homeowners can work through in a weekend focuses on what you can safely check yourself, what to look for in the attic, and when to bring in a professional. Most of it can be done from the ground, a ladder at the gutter line, or the attic hatch.
Why Fall Is the Right Time in Katy
Fall maintenance is about timing. Summer damage is fresh and easy to spot, temperatures are finally comfortable enough to spend an hour in the attic, and roofing crews are usually easier to schedule than during the spring hail rush. Fixing small problems now also means your roof enters winter rain and next spring's storm season in good shape. Treat this fall roof maintenance checklist Katy routine as a yearly habit, like changing your AC filter.
Hurricane season officially runs until November 30, so early fall is still storm season. If a late tropical system is in the forecast, our hurricane roof preparation guide covers the steps to take before it arrives.
Step 1: Walk the Property and Look Up
Start with a slow lap around the house in good daylight, with binoculars if you have them. Look at each slope from at least two angles.
- Missing, lifted or creased shingles. Wind can break the seal strip so a shingle flaps without falling off. A crease line across the shingle is the giveaway.
- Exposed or popped nails. Heat cycling can push nails up, which can puncture the shingle above.
- Ridge cap damage. The ridge takes the most wind. Look for cracked or missing cap pieces.
- Dark streaks. Black streaking is usually algae, very common in Katy's humidity. It is mostly cosmetic, but heavy growth can hold moisture.
- Debris piles. Leaves and pine needles in valleys and behind chimneys trap water against the roof.
- Sagging lines. A ridge or slope that looks wavy may point to decking or structural issues and needs a professional look.
Step 2: Clean and Check Gutters and Downspouts
Gutters are the most neglected part of most roofing systems. In neighborhoods with mature trees, such as parts of Nottingham Country, Kelliwood and Pine Mill Ranch, they fill quickly. Clogged gutters overflow behind the fascia, rot the trim and soak the foundation soil, which is a real concern on Katy's expansive clay.
- Clear leaves, needles and silt by hand or with a scoop from a stable ladder.
- Flush each downspout with a hose and confirm water exits freely at the bottom.
- Look for asphalt granules in the debris. A small amount is normal; a lot can signal aging or hail-damaged shingles.
- Check that hangers are tight and gutters slope toward the downspouts.
- Make sure downspouts discharge away from the foundation with extensions or splash blocks.
If your gutters are undersized for your roof, sagging or pulling away, our gutters and drainage service can help.
Step 3: Inspect Roof Penetrations and Flashing
Most roof leaks do not start in the middle of a field of shingles. They start where something passes through the roof or where the roof meets a wall.
Pipe boots
The rubber collars around plumbing vent pipes dry out and crack under Texas sun, often well before the shingles wear out. From the ground, look for a collar that appears split, shrunken or pulled away from the pipe. Cracked pipe boots are one of the most common leak sources we repair.
Flashing
Check the metal flashing where the roof meets walls, chimneys and dormers. Rust, gaps, or sealant that has cracked and peeled are warning signs. Sealant is a short-term patch, not a permanent fix.
Vents and skylights
Look for cracked plastic vent covers, dented metal vents, and turbines that wobble or have stopped spinning. Around skylights, look for stains on the interior drywall frame.

Step 4: Check the Attic on a Cool Morning
The attic tells you what the outside of the roof cannot. Bring a good flashlight and step only on joists or a walkway.
- Water stains on decking or rafters, especially around pipes, vents and valleys
- Daylight showing through anywhere other than designed vent openings
- Damp or compressed insulation, a sign of a slow leak
- Mildew or a musty smell, often caused by poor ventilation or a bath fan venting into the attic
- Blocked soffit vents where insulation has been pushed against the eaves
Ventilation problems are common in Katy and quietly shorten roof life. Our post on attic ventilation in Katy, TX explains what good airflow looks like.
Step 5: Trim Trees and Clear the Roof Line
Branches that rub against shingles scrape off granules, and overhanging limbs drop debris and give squirrels a path onto the roof. Trim branches back several feet from the roof line. For large limbs near power lines or over the house, hire a tree service. Fall is a good time because many trees are less active and there is still time before spring storms.
Step 6: Document Everything
This is the step most homeowners skip, and it can matter a great deal later. Take dated photos of each roof slope, the gutters, the attic and any existing issues. Save them somewhere safe with your policy documents. If a spring hailstorm damages the roof, those baseline photos help show what changed. Our storm damage checklist walks through what to photograph after a storm.
While you are at it, pull out your homeowners policy. Check your wind and hail deductible, which on many Texas policies is a percentage of the dwelling coverage rather than a flat amount, and note your renewal date.
