Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles in Texas: Are They Worth It for Your Katy Home?

Impact-rated shingles can mean fewer hail claims and, with many insurers, a lower premium. Here is what the Class 4 rating actually tests, what it does not promise, and how to make sure you get credit for it.

Dark storm sky building over a suburban neighborhood before a hailstorm

After every spring hailstorm, Katy homeowners ask the same question: is there a roof that will not get torn up next time? The closest answer most people can afford is Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. Texas insurers have paid out heavily for hail damage over the years, and many now reward homeowners who install impact-rated roofing with lower premiums. But the rating is often misunderstood, the discount varies a lot, and the paperwork matters more than people expect. This guide explains how Class 4 impact-resistant shingles Texas homeowners are buying actually perform, and whether they make sense for your home.

What the Class 4 Rating Actually Tests

The most common impact rating for shingles comes from the UL 2218 standard. In the test, steel balls of increasing size are dropped from set heights onto a roofing sample, striking the same spot twice. The sample is then examined for cracks or tears that go through the material.

RatingSteel ball diameter
Class 11.25 inches
Class 21.5 inches
Class 31.75 inches
Class 42 inches

Class 4 is the highest rating. A few products are tested under a different standard, FM 4473, which uses ice balls instead of steel. Insurers generally recognize UL 2218 Class 4, and some also accept FM 4473 Class 4. Ask your carrier which they accept.

What it does not test

The lab test uses a controlled drop onto a sample at a set temperature. Real hail can be larger than 2 inches, can be driven sideways by wind, and can strike shingles that have aged for years in the Texas sun. Class 4 shingles hold up much better than standard architectural shingles, but they are hail-resistant, not hail-proof.

How Class 4 Shingles Are Made

Most Class 4 asphalt shingles get their toughness in one of two ways:

  • Polymer-modified asphalt (often called SBS or rubberized): The asphalt is blended with polymers so it flexes on impact instead of cracking. These shingles tend to stay flexible longer as they age.
  • Reinforced backing: A tougher mat or added reinforcing layer on the back of a conventional shingle helps it resist fracturing.

Many standing-seam and stone-coated metal roofs also carry a Class 4 rating, which is one reason metal has become more popular around Katy. Our metal roofing page covers that option. Metal can show cosmetic dents from hail even when it keeps out water, which matters for insurance, as explained below.

How Insurers Treat the Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles Texas Homeowners Install

Texas has long encouraged insurers to offer premium discounts for roofs with qualifying impact ratings, and many carriers do. The amount is the part nobody can promise. It depends on your insurer, your policy form, your location and sometimes the age of the roof. Some homeowners see a meaningful reduction on the wind and hail portion of the premium; others see very little.

Before you choose a product, do three things:

  1. Call your agent and ask for the discount in writing. Ask whether it applies to the full premium or only the wind and hail portion, and whether it changes at renewal.
  2. Ask which ratings qualify. UL 2218 Class 4, FM 4473 Class 4, or both.
  3. Ask what documentation they need. Many insurers want the product name, proof of the rating, and an invoice or installation certificate from the contractor.
Read the cosmetic damage language: Some Texas policies exclude or limit coverage for cosmetic hail damage, such as dents in metal or marks on impact-rated shingles that do not affect function. Check your policy so you know what a future claim would and would not cover.

Cost: What Class 4 Shingles Add to a Katy Roof

The Class 4 impact-resistant shingles Texas roofers install cost more than standard architectural shingles. The difference depends on the brand and product line, but as a rough planning figure the upgrade often adds somewhere around 10 to 30 percent to the shingle portion of the job. Labor, tear-off, underlayment, flashing and disposal are similar either way, so the overall project increase is usually smaller than the material markup suggests.

For context, architectural asphalt shingle replacement in the Houston area runs roughly $4.50 to $7.50 per square foot of roof area installed, and a typical Katy home has 2,400 to 3,200 square feet of roof area. Our post on roof replacement cost in Katy, TX breaks down the rest of the price.

Do Class 4 Shingles Pay Off for Katy Homeowners?

Whether Class 4 impact-resistant shingles Texas insurers discount are worth it on your house is a personal calculation, but these factors usually decide it:

  • How long you will stay. Discounts accumulate year after year. If you plan to stay a decade, the savings have time to add up. If you are selling next year, the benefit is smaller, though buyers in hail country often like the feature.
  • Your deductible. Many Texas policies now carry a percentage deductible for wind and hail. On a higher deductible, avoiding even one claim is worth a lot.
  • Hassle factor. A roof that shrugs off moderate hail means fewer inspections, fewer claims, fewer contractors on your property, and less risk of leaks before a claim is settled.
  • HOA rules. Class 4 shingles come in colors and profiles similar to standard architectural shingles, so they usually work within HOA guidelines in communities like Cinco Ranch, Grand Lakes or Tamarron. Confirm the color with your HOA before ordering.

Upgrading During an Insurance Claim

If your roof is being replaced after hail damage, that is often the smartest time to upgrade. Your insurer typically pays to replace with like kind and quality, so the difference between a standard shingle and a Class 4 shingle is usually yours to pay. Because the tear-off and labor are already covered by the claim, the upgrade cost is just the material difference, and the premium discount may start right away. Get the price difference in writing from your contractor.

One firm rule: your deductible is still your responsibility. Any contractor offering to waive or absorb it is violating Texas law (Business & Commerce Code §27.02). We help homeowners document damage and meet the adjuster through our storm and hail damage service, and our Texas roof insurance claim guide walks through the full process.

Installation and Documentation Checklist

  • Confirm the exact product line is Class 4 rated; not every shingle from a brand is.
  • Keep a wrapper or label from the bundles showing the rating.
  • Get an invoice listing the product name, color and rating.
  • Ask your contractor for any installation certificate your insurer requires.
  • Send the paperwork to your agent promptly and confirm the discount appears on your next declarations page.
  • Take dated photos of the finished roof for your records.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does Class 4 mean on a shingle?

It is the highest rating under the UL 2218 impact test, in which steel balls of increasing size are dropped onto a roofing sample. A Class 4 product withstands the largest 2-inch ball, dropped twice on the same spot, without cracking through.

How much is the insurance discount for Class 4 shingles in Texas?

It varies widely by insurer, policy type and location, and some carriers offer little or none. Ask your agent for the exact discount in writing before you choose a product, and ask what documentation they require.

Are Class 4 shingles hail-proof?

No. They resist damage much better than standard shingles in testing, but very large or wind-driven hail can still damage them. Think of them as hail-resistant, not hail-proof.

Can I get a discount if my roof is replaced through an insurance claim?

Often yes, if you upgrade to a Class 4 product and pay any cost difference yourself. Your insurer typically pays to replace like kind and quality, so the upgrade amount is usually your responsibility, but the premium discount may help offset it over time.
